Why fleets still struggle

The cost of how it’s done today

Paper PTW systems are slow to assemble, easy to misfile, and disconnected from the risk assessment that justified the work.

The traditional approach

Permits are handwritten; copies stay in a cabin folder; shore has no view of active high-risk work. Expired or unsigned permits get reused under pressure.

Monday with WaterTight

What changes when this is under control

Under Job Safety Doc's, issue permits from templates, attach risk assessments and toolbox talks into frequent job packs, print for the worksite, and close or cancel when work ends—including enclosed-space register support aligned with COSWP Chapter 15.

Time back

Reuse frequent job packs instead of assembling paper RA + PTW + toolbox for every job.

Less waste

Fewer delayed jobs caused by missing or misfiled paper permits.

Lower risk

Validity, close/cancel discipline, and enclosed-space register support for high-risk entry.

How Permit To Work delivers it

Permit templates (isolation, gas test, fire watch, validity, signatories)

Issue, close, and cancel permits per vessel

Frequent Job Packs for recurring work (hot work, mooring, and more)

Capabilities

  1. safety write to issue; enclosed-space config may need safety_manage
  2. Web-primary workflow; verify mobile sync before relying on queued actions
  3. Never reuse expired or unsigned permits
  4. Digital permit does not replace physical isolation
  5. Register supports COSWP Ch 15—does not alone authorise entry
  6. Bundle print for site control alongside digital records

Ship to shore

How the work moves

  1. Supervisor selects a frequent job pack or builds RA + PTW + toolbox
  2. Crew review and complete required signatures onboard
  3. Work proceeds with the printed or digital pack at the worksite
  4. Close or cancel the permit; retain the record for audit

Questions before you commit

Where do I find Permit to Work in WaterTight?
Safety → Job Safety Doc's → Permits to Work. It is part of the job safety pack workflow, not a separate top-level menu item.
Can permits be printed for onboard use?
Yes. Job packs support print-friendly layouts so the worksite has a physical pack while the digital record stays in the system.
Does a digital permit replace isolation on board?
No. The permit records the controls. Physical isolation, gas testing, and rescue arrangements must still match your SMS and the actual job.
Does the enclosed-space register authorise entry?
No. It supports COSWP Chapter 15 discipline. Entry still follows company SMS, Master authority, gas testing, and rescue planning.
